Republicans Just Sent a Giant “F** You” to American Farmers — And They Don’t Care

USAID

The shutdown of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is a disaster for many reasons, but at its core, it is a giant middle finger to American farmers.

Aiding Russia, Undermining Democracy, and Breaking the Law

Let’s start with the obvious: USAID provides vital assistance to countries in need, countering Russian and Chinese influence worldwide. This is the very thing Trump doesn’t care about—because he has always prioritized his allegiance to Putin over the well-being of the United States. His willingness to undermine Ukraine’s defense, and now the complete dismantling of USAID, only further prove his dedication to Putin’s agenda.

Beyond that, one of USAID’s primary missions is to promote democratic governance. By allowing USAID to be obliterated, Republicans are openly admitting they do not care about democracy. It’s an incredibly stupid move, considering their jobs exist solely because of democracy. But that’s the thing about fascists—they only care about power, not governing.

Most importantly, the shutdown of USAID is completely illegal. Musk had no authority to close it, and his personal cronies—Akash Bobba, Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Shaotran—illegally accessed classified information without clearance. This blatant violation of The Espionage Act (18 U.S. Code § 793 & § 798) and Executive Order 13526 should have resulted in immediate arrests. Instead? Crickets.

I reached out to my Republican Congress Representative, Nick Langworthy, and directly demanded an explanation for why he believes it is acceptable to put national security at risk by allowing unqualified, inexperienced individuals to handle classified materials. Unsurprisingly, he refused to respond. You can read more about the other serious issues Nick Langworthy has ignored in my article, Nick Langworthy Fails NY-23: Ignoring Farmers, National Security, and His Constituents.

The Death of USAID is the Death of American Farming

Republicans aren’t just telling us they don’t care about democracy or national security. They’re also telling us they don’t care about U.S. farmers.

USAID purchases $2 billion worth of crops from U.S. farmers every year, including wheat, rice, corn, sorghum, yellow split peas, and vegetable oil. With USAID gone, so is one of the largest and most reliable buyers of American agricultural products. Farmers are already feeling the effects—stockpiles of food are rotting away in U.S. ports, with no way to be shipped or distributed.

Officials on Capitol Hill report that:

  • 235,000 tons of wheat ready for shipment is sitting in warehouses in Houston, stranded due to USAID’s closure.
  • More than 29,000 metric tons of food commodities, valued at $39 million, are stuck in USAID warehouses in Houston, unable to be shipped anywhere
  • Similar backlogs exist in Boston, Miami, Norfolk, Savannah, New York, Chicago, and Lake Charles.

The result? Farmers aren’t getting paid. Their hard work is being wasted, and their livelihoods are at risk. Meanwhile, who is footing the bill to store food that was never meant to sit rotting in warehouses? There’s also a domino effect on the shipping companies that were contracted to transport these goods. Will they be compensated for the canceled shipments? Will these companies survive now that one of their most reliable customers has been shut down by Trump and Musk’s illegal activities—while Republicans’ silence and complicity allow it to continue? And because there is no plan for a future buyer for these commodities, the entire American farm economy is now at risk. When the farm economy collapses, food security in America collapses with it. The effects won’t just be felt by farmers—it will impact every single person who eats food in this country.

Republicans Have No Plan—Because They Don’t Care

There has been no response from Republicans in Congress about how they plan to:

  • Deal with the hundreds of thousands of tons of food sitting in warehouses with no destination.
  • Compensate farmers for the crops they worked hard to produce.
  • Find a new, reliable buyer for American agricultural products.

I reached out to Nick Langworthy again, several times, asking him to address this issue. No response. That’s because Republicans don’t care about farmers. If they don’t care about national security, they certainly don’t care about food security.

At this point, the only small consolation for their cowardice and greed is that Elon Musk will eventually come for their jobs, too. Just like the thousands of people now unemployed because of Republican inaction, these spineless politicians will soon find themselves expendable. They let this crisis happen. They refused to act. And when the consequences hit home, they’ll be jobless—just like the Americans they abandoned.
