From day one, Trump’s executive orders have demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law and the constitutional principles that have guided the United States for almost 250 years. Among his alarming actions, Trump issued pardons to January 6th rioters—individuals who attacked democracy and took the life of a police officer. These pardons make it clear that the Republican Party’s rhetoric about “Blue Lives Matter” is nothing more than hollow posturing.
But the most chilling executive order signed by Trump goes even further. He decreed that children born in the United States to Mexican immigrants should no longer be granted citizenship. This directive directly violates the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which has been in effect since 1868 and unambiguously states:
