The Real Reason Republicans Banned TikTok
March 7, 2025 | by Renegade

TikTok’s ban has nothing to do with data privacy. That’s just a convenient lie Republicans cooked up to justify their actions. And that’s not even my opinion—it’s just a fact. If this were truly about data privacy, then why aren’t Google or Meta banned? Both companies collect far more private data on their users than TikTok ever did. And if TikTok were actually misusing user data, wouldn’t it also be banned in Europe, where data privacy laws are far stricter than in the U.S.? The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) alone makes American data laws look like a joke.
So, if the “data privacy” excuse is just that—an excuse—what’s the real reason behind the Republican-led legislation that led to TikTok pulling out of the U.S.? Here are the top three most likely explanations, ranked from least to most likely.
5: Trump is Incredibly Stupid
Trump is an idiot. That’s not an opinion; it’s just a fact. Need proof? Look no further than the two priorities he set for his presidency in a speech given just days before his inauguration: renaming the Gulf of Mexico and buying Greenland. Yes, really.
First, the U.S. doesn’t have the right—or the capability—to rename the Gulf of Mexico. Sure, Republicans excel at rewriting history and whitewashing textbooks, so maybe they could call it the “Gulf of America” in the U.S. But the second you step outside our borders, every world map will still say “Gulf of Mexico.” Also, how is this a priority? The healthcare system is so bad that people are literally killing healthcare CEOs, grocery prices are skyrocketing (which Trump has already said he won’t do anything about), and yet… renaming a body of water is at the top of his list? Insulting and stupid.
Then there’s Greenland. Even if it were for sale (spoiler: it wasn’t), where exactly would Trump get the money? Thanks to the GOP’s massive tax breaks for billionaires (seriously, no one making $20K a year should pay more in taxes than someone making billions), America is drowning in debt. And on February 25, 2025, every Republican in the House voted ‘Yea’ on H.Con.Res.14, which makes deep budget cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security while further reducing taxes on the already undertaxed ultra-wealthy—adding approximately $4 trillion to the national debt. A country that far in debt does not have enough funds to purchase an entire country.
Beyond the financial impossibility, why would Greenlanders even want to be part of the U.S.? As of 2024, Greenland had a population of about 57,000 and, while technically self-governing, it remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark. And guess what? The people there enjoy better healthcare, higher wages, stronger worker protections, less sexism, and an overall better quality of life than Americans. Why would they willingly trade that for… this?
And let’s not forget tariffs—Trump’s other brilliant economic plan. Every major financial institution has warned that his proposed tariffs will devastate the economy, with the average household expected to pay $2,000 to $7,500 more per year for essentials. Worse yet, there’s a 75% chance of a major recession by 2025—not just because of tariffs, but due to Trump’s entire economic “strategy.”
So, is it possible that Trump wants TikTok banned simply because he’s mind-numbingly stupid? Absolutely. And since Republicans are nothing more than spineless, greedy worms, they just went along with it.
4: Trump and Republicans are Racist
Trump and the Republican Party are racist. That’s not up for debate. The only people who deny it are lying. The GOP has a long, proud history of racism, from demonizing immigrants to accusing them of stealing jobs, committing crimes, and—yes, really—eating people’s pets. It’s absurd.
For the record, it is literally impossible for an immigrant to “steal” a job. They’re not hiring themselves. American businesses choose to hire immigrants, often because they’ll accept lower wages. So, are immigrants “stealing” jobs, or are companies freely giving them away? And let’s be clear—immigrants are essential to the economy. Without them, it would collapse. Also, fun fact: Every white person in America is here because of immigration, but that irony is lost on Republicans.
Then there’s the GOP’s other favorite lie: “China is stealing our jobs and manufacturing.” No, China didn’t steal anything—American corporations willingly outsourced jobs to China, Taiwan, the Philippines, and other countries out of pure corporate greed. You can’t “steal” what was freely given away.
Oh, and Trump’s father was a well-documented member of the KKK, so… yeah. The apple didn’t fall far from that tree.
Given all this, it’s entirely possible that Trump wanted to ban TikTok simply because it’s owned by non-white people. And once again, spineless, greedy Republicans just went along with it even though he is clearly a delusional moron because they’re racist, too.
3: Trump Wants to Ingratiate Himself with the Public
Let’s face it—no matter how you spin it, banning TikTok is a terrible look politically and a bad move with the public. Trump is an egomaniac who literally pays people to fan the flames of his own self-importance. TikTok preempted the Republican ban by going dark in the U.S. the day before it was set to take effect. And, lo and behold, at the last minute, Trump suddenly “changes his mind” and postpones the ban to “save” TikTok. He’s literally trying to play both the hero and the villain in a crisis he manufactured entirely on his own. Which, if you think about it, is a pretty disgusting attempt to worm his way into public favor.
2: Because Elon Musk Told Them To
Since acquiring Twitter, Elon Musk has driven the platform straight into the ground. Users have been fleeing in droves, and since the November 2024 election alone, millions have abandoned ship for better alternatives. (Speaking of which, you can check out Best Alternatives to X aka Twitter here.) Not only is X hemorrhaging users, but it’s also one of the least popular social media platforms among teenagers—aka the demographic that actually drives social media trends.
Desperate to salvage his rapidly failing, poorly managed investment, it’s highly likely Musk paid off his Republican buddies—and Trump himself—to kneecap the competition. After all, what better way to save a dying platform than to eliminate its rival?
Need proof? According to Mashable, literally one day after TikTok preemptively went dark in response to the Republican ban, X proudly announced the rollout of its new TikTok-style video feature, posting: “An immersive new home for videos is rolling out to users in the U.S. today.”
Subtle.
This is, of course, a hilariously sad attempt to claw back users who have long since abandoned X. But it won’t work—because those users left for a reason. They have standards, morals, and a shred of decency. No cheap gimmick is going to lure them back.
1: Authoritarian Control
The U.S. now joins China, Iran, and Afghanistan as one of the few countries where TikTok is banned or unavailable. That’s not exactly a list we want to be on, especially given the restrictive freedoms and heavy government control in those countries.
Historically, revolutions and social change happen through the free exchange of information and ideas. One reason humans thrived while Neanderthals went extinct? We shared knowledge across groups, leading to rapid technological advancements. Neanderthals, meanwhile, lived in isolated groups with little communication, and their tools stagnated for thousands of years.
A more recent example? The Age of Enlightenment. This period of intellectual and philosophical rebirth, fueled by the aftermath of the Renaissance and influenced by science and rationalism, was also propelled by the rise of coffeehouses. Originally, coffeehouses weren’t just places to grab a quick caffeine fix; they were hubs where thinkers, students, and revolutionaries gathered to share ideas and spark change.
And this is exactly what Republicans fear.
America is no longer a democracy—it’s an oligarchy controlled by a handful of billionaires. These billionaires own nearly every major news outlet, shaping the narratives we see. Republicans destroyed Net Neutrality, allowing ISPs, Internet Service Providers, to spy on us and actively censor what information we are allowed to access on the internet. Elon Musk silences critics on Twitter. The Washington Post’s long-time satirist Ann Telnaes quit after the paper (owned by Jeff Bezos) censored her cartoon mocking him. Trump even has an “Enemies List” of journalists he doesn’t like—his own personal Nixonian tantrum. He’s openly threatened to jail reporters who don’t flatter him. Meanwhile, Republicans scream about “freedom of speech” while actively suppressing the free press.
If you don’t see a problem with a handful of billionaires controlling our information, you’re beyond help.
But what does this have to do with TikTok?
TikTok is one of the few major social media platforms not owned by a U.S. billionaire. The billionaires who control our internet, news, and government have apparently already unilaterally agreed to censor what we see. TikTok exists outside their control, allowing the free exchange of information—something authoritarian Republicans and their billionaire overlords desperately want to stop.
Conclusion
We do not live in a democracy anymore. As long as Republicans remain in the pockets of billionaires, America will continue to function as an oligarchy. The TikTok ban is just another step in their quest for total control.
